A NAS (network attached storage) is a small server, usually built from several hard drives, that all devices in a network can access. Compared with cloud storage, a NAS offers many functions and often replaces a small server in homes and offices. Well-known manufacturers include Synology, QNAP, Buffalo, LaCie, Western Digital and Seagate.
Most NAS systems combine their drives in a RAID to form one logical volume, which provides speed and redundancy. In addition, NAS drives contain special system partitions that are often spread across several drives. This can make NAS data recovery considerably more complex – in many cases all drives of the NAS are needed to recover all data.
When can lost NAS data be recovered?
Recovery from a NAS drive is possible as long as the data has not been destroyed or completely overwritten. With typical faults such as defective read/write heads or damaged electronics, the data can usually be recovered. Recovering deleted data from a NAS drive works much like recovery from a normal hard drive, except that a system partition occupies part of the disk.
Data recovery process
Be vigilant and do not attempt to salvage the data on the device yourself. This can make recovery impossible.
Which NAS systems can we recover?
We recover data from NAS devices of all common brands, for example Asustor, Buffalo, Fujitsu, HP, ioSafe, Netgear, QNAP, Seagate, Synology, TerraMaster, Thecus, Western Digital and ZyXEL.
If your model is not listed, we can still try to recover your data: every NAS is built from standard hard drives, so the problems are usually well known.
Important: if your NAS reports a failed drive, do not start a rebuild or re-initialisation before your data is safe. These operations can overwrite data.
Data recovery from storage media from all manufacturers
All orders are processed exclusively in our Berlin laboratory. The data recovery from mechanically defective hard drives takes place within a dust-free environment of our clean room workbench of clean room class 100.
Frequently asked questions about NAS data recovery
Yes, in principle. Technically there is little difference between recovering a NAS drive and an internal hard drive. Data on NAS drives is usually stored on an ext4 or Btrfs file system.
As long as the data has not been overwritten, recovery is usually possible. Physically damaged drives are opened and repaired at our clean room workbench.
The diagnosis is free of charge. A standard recovery costs 357–535.50 euros, a special recovery (for example mechanical damage that needs spare parts) 476–897 euros plus any spare parts. If no data can be recovered, you pay nothing for the recovery. Details: Prices. For RAID and NAS systems the price is calculated per defective drive.
Deleted files can often be recovered by searching the raw data. Original file names may be lost; the files are then sorted using headers and metadata.
